A Christian Home

When people ask for my favourite bible verse or movie they’ll get a very long list, because I can never narrow it down. My favourite TV show is Poldark – no contest. But my greatest blessing? That’s an easy one. My parents.

I know everyone says that, it’s so cheesy. But seriously I think those of us who have grown up in a Christian home take this for granted. I owe much of my faith to my Mum and Dad.

Hear me right: my faith is my own, not theirs. This is a common misconception. My parents were gracious and humble enough to know that salvation didn’t come from a childhood doing the right things, but a personal relationship with Jesus. They never pushed too hard for us to attend church nor did they force bible time on us. They gave us freedom to make our own choice but also clear in what they had chosen.

This post is for all those Christian parents out there asking what they’re doing. Questioning what are the advantages when their child is being ridiculed in school or even walks away from the church for a number of years.

Thank you. Even if your child doesn’t say it now or ever really understand, you have given them the greatest start to life they could ever imagine – growing up with parents who love Jesus.

So here is a list of 10 reasons why you’re doing the right thing:

1. Knowing Bible verses and stories by heart to get me through the difficult days

2. I know how to socialise with every age group. I can hold a 4 day old baby properly and hold a conversation with a 90 year old. (Because Church coffee time is a social skills class).

3. A support network like no other – a youth pastoral team, a vicar, a mentor, the godly prayer women – for the rest of your life.

4. Prayer isn’t a completely weird concept, but talking to God is second nature. We don’t need to learn a new language.

5. I know I enter my day and two people have already prayed for me.

6. Knowing I don’t need to be perfect. And that there is unconditional love even when I screw up badly.

7. Praying before any major event or decision

8. Knowing what Jesus love in a person actually looks like on earth.

9. Growing up in a family of 2.2billion people

10. Knowing Jesus my whole life.
